One of my favorite bands are the Legendary Shack Shakers, a mix of blues, country, rockabilly, punk and other roots type of music. Frontman JD Wilkes had contacted me after I drew a caricature of him and asked if I wanted to direct a music video. This was one of those "right place right time" things. The video would be inspired by the old Fleischer cartoons with Betty Boop and Cab Calloway. Intertwining live action segments and an animated story. JD himself came up with the idea of the story as well as some key elements such as the ghost version of himself, the vines, and the giant tree of all his influences. Altogether the video took 9 months with myself as the central crew member. I did have Tara Billinger help me with a few backgrounds. The final product is a mix of gothic and vintage aesthetics faithfully rendered in glorious black and white.
